ITD: The Danish Minister for Transport must realise the seriousness of the situation at the rest areas

Road hauliers and truck drivers fight on a daily basis with parking challenges at the state rest areas, where large fines are given for parking outside the markings. There are far from sufficient rest areas when the truck drivers are to take their legal rests. The situation is very serious, and now a gathered industry has contacted the Danish Minister for Transport in order to solve the problems.

ITD has together with Dansk Erhverv, DI Transport, SLD, Danske Speditører, DTL and 3F recently sent an overall appeal to the Danish Minister for Transport, Ole Birk Olesen. The goal is that the Minister for Transport together with the industry here and now finds useful solutions to rectify the situation.

- The enforcement of the new rules specifically imply that the drivers are often forced to park outside the parking markings and are fined a parking fee of over 2,000 DKK, because the authorities have chosen to control if the vehicles are parked within the parking markings, says ITD’s CEO, Carina Christensen.

Late January, ITD wrote the Danish Minister for Transport, Ole Birk Olesen, with a clear appeal that the Minister must summon all relevant parts to an emergency evaluation of the consequences of the new time limiting for truck parking at the rest areas alongside the motorway net, where large fines are now give for parking outside the markings.

- Our worst fear is, that the Minister for Transport does not at all have an eye for the seriousness of the situation. The road hauliers need urgently an optimisation of utilising the parking areas. The politicians must act quickly and give the industry the opportunity to utilise the vacant spaces at the rest areas to the extent that it is possible and safe, says Carina Christensen.
